Project Log #11 — Citrine Release!
24 days ago – Mon, Oct 28, 2024 at 02:17:53 PM

Hey everyone! The Project Log is early this month, as I've decided to combine it with an exciting announcement: IR's penultimate Backer Preview, CITRINE, is out, adding the last two systems I've been working on for quite some time now: downtime actions and weapon customization! You should have it in your emails by the time you read this post, if not sooner.

Here's some version notes:

With Citrine, IR is now feature-complete—every system I want in the game is present and functional. All that's left is to flesh things out (adding additional Deep Support options, Veil enemies, etc) and re-insert the connective tissue from Starlight with some updates for all the things I've learned between 2022 (wow!) and now. These will be the domain of the Pre-Release version (or "DIAMOND", if you want to be cute), which is the last version of IR you'll see before the finished, laid-out, cleaned-up PDF is in your (figurative, digital) hands. I don't have a firm timeline for the PR but will do my best to update you as I get closer to release.

I'm so excited to have gotten here and even more excited to show you where we're going! Thanks so much for being a part of this, and till next time—

Project Log #10 — Still on track!
about 2 months ago – Thu, Oct 03, 2024 at 01:10:03 PM

Hi all,

Today's project log is going to be a very quick update! Work on backer preview CITRINE is proceeding well and I plan to have it in your hands sometime next week.  I'll be posting a more detailed list of changes and additions in an announcement then, but for now, thank you for supporting the game as we close in on feature completion!

Project Log #9 — Backer Preview 2.0 and the path to release!
3 months ago – Thu, Sep 05, 2024 at 02:26:21 PM

Hello again! This Project Log is going to be nice and punchy. After an August full of unexpected delays, I'm happy to release the second version of the IR: OVERDRIVE Backer Preview: Version 2.0, "BERYL". It should already be in your email inbox, Backerkit willing.

The BERYL version is all about solidifying the game's shape: the core rules and other game systems are now mostly locked in, with the exceptions of Downtime and weapon development. Future versions will focus on adding more content, polishing, and of course fleshing out those final two systems.

Here's the rough version notes, so you can get an idea of what's changed (it's a lot!)

Now that BERYL is behind us, what's next? Here's a rough outline:

BACKER PREVIEW 3.0, "CITRINE"
As mentioned above, the final Backer Preview version of IR, CITRINE, will include:

  • Full Downtime rules
  • Weapon development (similar to Focus Arts from Starlight)
  • Additional game content for existing systems (Deep Support, Veil Strains, etc.)

After Citrine, INFINITE REVOLUTION will be content-complete, and all further writing will focus on enhancements, explanations, and GMing resources. I have a confident timeline of early October for release.

PRE-RELEASE
The Pre-Release version of the book will be the last PDF distributed to backers before the final version with full layout. This will be draft-complete and include all writing in the finished book, pending editing and organizational changes. Less firm timeline here, but I'm hoping for early November.

BEYOND
Once the Pre-release has been proofed and edited, I'll be porting it to layout—I expect this to be a fairly speedy process. IR's visual style isn't exactly minimalist, but I've laid a substantial amount of groundwork for getting the book visually together already.

Concurrently with layout, I will be finalizing a print contract, getting quotes, and, once layout has completed, printing books! This is also around the time when I will start charging Backerkit pre-orders (notably, this does not include shipping—shipping will be charged as close to the actual date of post as possible to account for varying freight costs!). I don't have a specific window yet, but will update as it gets closer.

That's all for now! I appreciate everyone's patience and continued support, and I hope you enjoy the new release. 'Till next time, and as always—

Project Log #8 — Ashcan 2.0 Preview
4 months ago – Sat, Aug 03, 2024 at 12:05:38 PM

Hi backers! It's been a busy (and scorching) July. Hope you've all been keeping cool.

The next version of the ashcan, 2.0 BERYL, will release August 9th, 2024. This version will primarily focus on an overhauled incursion system, the first part of updated advancement (including new goodies for both players and GMs), and a small but significant update to the core rules. Let's talk about that, since it's one of the changes I'm most excited about.

The "Costs and Bonuses" section from Starlight has been removed entirely, replaced with a more abstracted but also more clearly-codified measure of how well your plan will work. The working name right now is Potential.

I like this change because it removes the uncertainty in measuring how well a Revolver's best effort can solve a given problem. This is important in a game where the average player character's ability lies so far beyond the scope of "normal human experience"—our intuition of "oh yeah, that would work" breaks down fast when you start dealing with nearlight speeds and stellar energy. It also ties into the game's broader themes of desperation against impossible odds—if even your best effort isn't enough, you can Push Your Limits to increase Potential, making even the impossible possible.

I rarely do outlinks in these updates, but if you're interested in my thoughts on this sort of intuitive resolution (where it works, where it doesn't, why it's cool) in more detail, check out the twitter thread I made about it here!

That's all for now! I'll be out of the country for the back half of August, so expect September's PL to be fairly light. I'm looking forward to sharing IR BERYL with you all! Until then—

Project Log #7 - Work Continues!
4 months ago – Thu, Jul 11, 2024 at 09:02:16 AM

Hi all! We've got a real short one today.

Work continues on the latest version of the ashcan, and I hope to have it to you by sometime in July. This version will have an overhauled version of the Veil and GM turn, some new advancement options, and even some (very cool) changes to how dice rolls are handled in-fiction! That last one's been a particular thorn in my side for a while now, and the extra time to polish that up (in conjunction with an extremely busy month as I prepare for a move) has made things stretch a little later than I'd like. We're getting there, though!

I've also gotten a few emails asking about the window for pre-orders for people who want to pick up the book but can't at the moment. I plan on accepting them right up until I have to ship the books out, so if you order in the summer or even the early fall, you should be safe!

That's all for now. Thanks for reading, and you know the drill—
